COLORADO RIVER RECOVERY PROGRAM
FY 95 ANNUAL PROJECT REPORT

RECOVERY PROGRAM
PROJECT NUMBER:~

I, Project Title: Reconnaissance survey and inventory of mainstem
bottomlands in the Upper Colorado River Basin.

II, Principal Investigators:

David Irving and Tim Modde
Colorado River Fish Project
266 West 100 North Suite 2
Vernal, UT 84078
801-789-0354 (Phone)
801-789-4805 (Fax)
r6ffa_ver@mail.fws.gov (E-Mail Address)

Bob Burdick and Frank Pfeifer
Colorado River Fish Project
529 25 1/2 Road, Suite B-II0
Grand Junction, CO 81505
303-245-9319 (Phone)
303-245-6933 (Fax)
r6ffa_grj@mail,fws,gov (E-Mail Address)

III. Project Summary:

Historically, upper Colorado River basin floodplains were inundated each
year by sprin9 runoff, Today much of the river is channelized by levees,
dikes, rip-rap, and tamarisk, When seasonally-flooded habitats are
available, endangered fishes use them extensively to feed in prior to and
after spawning and perhaps to spawn in as well. Restoration of flooded
bottomland habitat is thought to be particularly important for recovery
of endangered fishes, The goal of this study was to inventory floodplain
habitats to provide managers with candidate sites for acquisition,
restoration, and management. Bottomlands adjacent to upper Colorado
River basin mainstem rivers representing potential endangered fish
habitat were identified, then classified and ranked according to their
potential value for endangered fish recovery. A Draft Final Report will
be submitted in December 1994,

IV. Study Schedule: Initial year FY 1993, Final year FY 1994

V. Relationship to RIPRAP: General Recovery Program Support Action Plan,
I LA. Conduct inventory of flooded bottoml and habitat for potential
restoration.

VI, Accomplishment of FY 94 Tasks and Deliverables, Discussion of Initial
Findings and Shortcomings:

FY 94 Tasks and Accomolishments:

1. Characterize and rank the inventory list of wetlands and bottomlands
according to potential value for endangered fish recovery.

a. Identify and select a prioritization scheme based on size
(acreage) and other criteri a most appropri ate for ranking the
recovery potential of flooded bottomlands for endangered fishes,
