Completed in April 1994, A three-member team' developed a
ranking scheme to prioritize bottomland sites. This scheme
initially was used on a sub-sample of 25 sites from the Green
River and 32 sites from the Colorado River. The ranking scheme
methodology will be discussed in detail in the Draft Final
Report,

b. Characterize wetlands and bottomlands identified in Objective 1.
This task includes ground-truthing for size, elevation above
river level, and other characteristics identified in the
prioritization system.

[Water sampling to determine productivity (zooplankton densities
and sPecies) and vegetation inventories will be conducted by a
wetland ecologist or other appropriate personnel. Funding may be
provided through the Bureau of Reclamation's Habitat Enhancement
(Capitol Improvement Project) scope of work, Information should
be provided to the bottomlands inventory team to be included in
the Final Report,]

1) Characterization of bottomland sites was completed in
September 1994 by the Grand Junction and Vernal CRFP offices,

2) Water chemistry and wetland inventory work was completed by
Dr. David J, Cooper and Craig Severn, who submitted several
draft reports to the Recovery Program in February 1994 (see
Appendix for citations). Although the 1994 scope of work for
this project said these reports would be included in the
Final Report, they are too lengthy and thus will remain as
stand-alone reports.

3) Temporary staff gauges were placed at 7 bottomland sites in
the Green Ri ver and 9 sites in Colorado Ri ver from May
through July 1994, The U,S, Bureau of Reclamation conducted
cross-sectional surveys in September and October 1994 to
generate bottomland profiles. Staff discharge relationships
are being developed by the U,S, Fish and Wildlife Service,
This information will help determine the flow requirements
necessary to inundate these bottom1and areas. Thi s
information will be completed in December 1994.

c. Determine land ownership, status, and access in order to evaluate
availability for potential acquisition or development of other
management options (acquisition, lease, easements, etc.).
accomplished by September 1994.

, U,S, Fish and Wildlife Service personnel: Pat Nelson, Bottomland
Coordinator, Region 6, Denver Colorado; Bob Burdick, Fishery Biologist,
Colorado River Fish Project, Grand Junction Colorado; and David Irving,
Fishery Biologist, Colorado River Fish Project, Vernal Utah, The meeting
was facilitated by Chuck Gallagher, Biologist, U.S, Bureau of
Reclamation, Grand Junction Colorado,

2
