unknown, none of the possible rodent species that may be affected are unique or
rare.

34. Ccmrent:

2. Page 19, Fish and Wildlife: Where are the resulting raptor surveys to have
been conducted in the spring of 1986? How would the proposed action affect
them? The same surveys should be made for aquatic species in the Dolores River.
The last sentence is a subjective evaluation and seems to address the entire
proposal. Please anit, quantify, or quality.

Response:

One of the raptor surveys was conducted on April 11, 1986, fran the confluence
of the San Miguel and Dolores Rivers upstream to approximately 3 miles above the
well site. One golden eagle nest was active and located about 3 miles
downstream of the collection well field. The proposed well site would not
adversely affect this eyrie.

The aquatic life of the Dolores River was inventoried for Reclamation in 1976.
Very few game fish and no threatened or endangered aquatic species were found.
For additional information refer to the Paradox Valley Unit Final Environmental
Statement.

35. Ccmrent:

a. Golden Eagles

During the sunmer of 1985, there was an active eyrie on the cliffs on the west
side of the Dolores, just upstream of Bedrock (T.47N.,R.18W., Sec. 19 SWSWSE).
The Fish and Wildlife Service recently flew this area searching for raptor
nests, but did not record this eyrie. We know that this eyrie was active last
year. The birds could be iIrpacted such that they abandon the eyrie during the
construction phase of this project.

Response:

Reclamation and Fish and Wildlife Service personnel flew over the unit area in
April 1986 and did not record any active nest sites. As a continuing concern,
however, Reclamation and the Service will again fly the area in July 1986 to
find active nest sites.

36. Ccmrent:

b. Mule Deer

There are a few mule deer wintering in the area. They would probably be
displaced fran the area for the full term of the construction activity.

Response:

During construction, a few mule deer may be disturbed. Once activity subsided,
it is anticipated these deer would adapt to the repetitious activity associated
with drilling operations.

34

C00076
