37. Ccmnent:

c. Canada Geese

Up to 300 Canada Geese have been seen wintering or resting on the D:>lores River
in the vicinity of the injection well and upstream for about one mile. The
birds use the D:>lores River Canyon as a flyway to the corn fields in Paradox
Valley. The drilling activities could cause the geese to abandon this stretch
of river, or their numbers could be greatly reduced. After construction
activities cease and operation of the facility begins, the geese would probably
reoccupy the area.

Response:

The text under wildlife has been expanded to include this ccmnent on Canada
geese.

38. Cannent:

d. Other

Birds that form the prey base of the peregrine falcons would be displaced fran
the construction activity areas.

Response:

One of the most carmon prey species for the peregrine falcon is pigeons (rock
doves) . Pigeons use this section of canyon for nesting and resting purposes,
blt construction activity and unit features would not adversely affect their
population.

39. Ccmrent:

l. The ~ would be a better document if the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service were
contacted again regarding threatened and endangered species.

Response:

Reclamation has coordinated with the Fish and Wildlife Service on all phases of
this unit.

40. Ccmrent:

2. peregrine Falcons

As mentioned above, during road, pipeline, and powerline construction, there
would be a slight reduction in available prey species for peregrines. There is
no data on the most important hunting areas for the Paradox eyrie; the proposal
would probably cause no noticeable effect on available prey.

The construction activity in Paradox Valley would be in direct line of sight of
the eyrie cliff. Therefore, if construction occurred during the
nesting/brood-rearing season, it would increase stress levels on the nesting

35

COCY17
