Canada Geese <br /> <br />Up to 300 Canada Geese have been seen wintering or resting on the D:>lores River <br />in the vicinity of the injection well and upstream for about one mile. The <br />birds use the D:>lores River Canyon as a flyway to the corn fields in Paradox <br />Valley. The drilling activities could cause the geese to abandon this stretch <br />of river, or their numbers could be greatly reduced. After construction <br />activities cease and operation of the facility begins, the geese would probably <br />reoccupy the area. <br /> <br />Response: <br /> <br />The text under wildlife has been expanded to include this ccmnent on Canada <br />geese. <br /> <br />38. Cannent: <br /> <br />d. Other <br /> <br />Birds that form the prey base of the peregrine falcons would be displaced fran <br />the construction activity areas. <br /> <br />Response: <br /> <br />One of the most carmon prey species for the peregrine falcon is pigeons (rock <br />doves) . Pigeons use this section of canyon for nesting and resting purposes, <br />blt construction activity and unit features would not adversely affect their <br />population. <br /> <br />39. The ~ would be a better document if the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service were <br />contacted again regarding threatened and endangered species. <br /> <br />Response: <br /> <br />Reclamation has coordinated with the Fish and Wildlife Service on all phases of <br />this unit. <br /> <br />40. Ccmrent: <br /> <br />2. peregrine Falcons <br /> <br />As mentioned above, during road, pipeline, and powerline construction, there <br />would be a slight reduction in available prey species for peregrines. There is <br />no data on the most important hunting areas for the Paradox eyrie; the proposal <br />would probably cause no noticeable effect on available prey. <br /> <br />The construction activity in Paradox Valley would be in direct line of sight of <br />the eyrie cliff. Therefore, if construction occurred during the <br />nesting/brood-rearing season, it would increase stress levels on the nesting <br /> <br />35 <br /> <br />COCY17 <br />
