Virgin River Basin Salinity Study

Field inventories were conducted in September to determine
the location and magnitude of erosion and salts coming from
rangeland areas. The staff is currently analyzing data
obtained from these field investigations.

Arizona Statewide Agricultural Model

Approval was granted by the Washington Advisory Council to
develop a plan of work for utilizing this model. Plans are
to work with the ESCS and FS to develop an analytical model
on irrigated lands in Arizona which will have the capability
to analyze alternative program actions and store data on
crop yields, irrigation efficiencies, etc.

CALIFORNIA: San Joaquin Valley Basin Study

Initial distribution of the basin report was made in August
to about 400 interested groups and individuals. Since then,
additional requests have nearly depleted the remaining supply
of 200 copies.

The report discusses improvements for flood prevention, drainage,
irrigation, camping, timber production, wilderness preservation,
range forage production, erosion and sedimentation control,
deer habitat and wildfire reduction. Much of the data was
made available in the form of individual "mini-reports" and
used as the study was in progress by individual counties,
councils of government, State and Federal agencies. Five of
the 28 early action projects identified in the report have
already either been authorized for installation or advanced
planning, or have applications for assistance, The most recent
use of the report is in the development of the State's 208
Water Quality Management Plan.

Sacramento Valley Basin Study

Special Study IA - 208 Water Quality Planning is being conducted
for the California Regional Water Quality Control Board, Central
Valley Region. Best Management Practices to reduce erosion
and sedimentation from agricultural lands are being evaluated.
Draft copies of the five mini-reports for the eight pilot study
areas have been completed. Final copies of the first mini-
report on "Resource Capabilities Affecting Sedimentation" (or
basic data) have been distributed.

A draft report to the Central Valley Regional Board is expected
in mid-January 1979 for incorporation into the State's Water
Management Plan to EPA.

0-26
