This
is one important facet of the federal-state-private situation
with respect to future use of water resources. With this in
mind, the Recreation-Environment Subcommittee met yesterday
at the site of the pupfish refugium near a natural hot spring
located high on the Nevada side about ~ mile below Hoover Dam.
The pupfish (cyprinodon diabolis) is native to Devil's Hole
in the Amargosa Desert, about 100 miles northwest of Las Vegas.
A transplant of 25 pupfish was made from Devil's Hole to the
refugium for purposes of protection and study. The transplanted
population grew to about 200 before receding to about 40 at
present, and in the process became larger and lighter in color
than the parent population in Devil's Hole. Presently, there
is not much ongoing or planned study being funded for the
governmental entities involved, Maintenance of the refugium
is the major activity.

Proposed hydro-power modifications to Hoover Dam were
viewed from the location of the pupfish refugium and from
inside the dam. Implications of the pupfish decision and the
proposed hydro-power midifications were discussed.

VH!pk

C-12
