Non-confllctlng wildlife <br />habitat management objsctlves, projects, and <br />mttlgatlng measurss will be Incorporated Into <br />new riparian/aquatic system management plans. <br /> <br />Livestock Grazing. LIvestock grazing use will <br />be permitted In riparian zones except from <br />March 1 through range readiness, during which <br />tIme tt would be elimInated to accelerate Im- <br />provement of riparian vegetation. To Improve <br />the condttlon of riparian zones, management <br />practlcss and principles will be established In ac- <br />tivity plans. Utilization of 35 percsnt by weight of <br />ksy forags species will be used as a general <br />guidance for Improvement; this may vary <br />depending on the Individual riparian system. <br />Tralllng uss will be IImtted as much as possible <br />and confined to sstabllshed roads. Trailing live- <br />stock will not be permitted to bed In riparian <br />zonas unless absolutely necessary. <br /> <br />Forestry. Woodland product harvests will not <br />be permitted In the management untt. <br /> <br />Oft-Road Vehicles. A total of 680 acres In <br />Roubldeau and Potter creeks will be closed to <br />ORV use. Vehicle use In the remainder of the <br />management untt will be IImtted to designated <br />roads and trails yearlong. <br /> <br />~ <br /> <br />Major Utllltlea. The management untt will be <br />open to development of major utility facilities. <br />Surface-dlsturblng activities which would have <br />long-tsrm adverss effects on riparian/aquatic <br />systems will be prohibited. <br /> <br />Acquisition ot Non-Federal Lands. If they are <br />available, non-federal lands that are necessary <br />for effective management of riparian/aquatic <br />systems may be acquired. <br /> <br />\ <br /> <br />Chapter Two <br /> <br />Access. Public access will be acquired Into the <br />Tsrror Creek area for prolsct development and <br />recreation purposes. The Potter Crsek road (five <br />miles) and the Dry Fork of Escalante Creek road <br />(two miles) will be closed and rehabilitated and <br />removed from the transportation plan. <br /> <br />Fire Management. A total of 3,082 acres of <br />public land will be managed under the fire sup- <br />pression category, wtth 1,607 acres Identified for <br />Intensive supprssslon and 1.475 acrss Identified <br />for condttlonal suppression. A total of 3,238 <br />acres will be managed under the fire-use <br />category where fire will be utilized as a manage- <br />ment tool. Planned or natural Ignitions meeting <br />pre-determlned prescriptions will be allowed on <br />these areas. <br /> <br />MANAGEMENT UNIT 10 <br /> <br />3,292 Acres of Public Surface; Isss than 1 per- <br />cent of the Planning Area <br /> <br />Management Untt 10 consists of two tracts In <br />the High Park/Storm King Peak area 20 mllss <br />southeast of Montrose. The management untt <br />(3,292 acres of public land) ranges from 8,500 <br />fset to over 10,000 fest In elevation, and Is used <br />extensively as an elk calving area In the spring. <br />The largsst commercial timber stands In the <br />planning area exist In this untt. <br /> <br />The management unit will be managed to en- <br />hance tts use as an elk calving area. Any distur- <br />bance during the calving season (May 1 through <br />June 15) will be IImtted as much as possible. <br />Habttat In elk calving areas will be Improved, and <br />wildlife will have first priority for allocation of new <br />forage. <br /> <br />011 and Gas. Federal 011 and gas estate (3,292 <br />acres of federal surface and 1.423 acres of spltt- <br />estate lands) will be open to leasing wtth a <br />seasonal stipulation on seismic and drilling ac- <br />tlvttles In effect from May 1 through June 15 to <br />prevent disturbance of calving elk.
