A total of 2,322 acres will be <br />managed under ths fire-use category whers fire <br />would be utilized as a management tool. <br />Planned or natural Ignitions meeting pre-deter- <br />mined prescriptions will be allowed on this area. <br /> <br />MANAGEMENT UNIT 8 <br /> <br />8,942 Acres of Public Surface; 2 percent of the <br />Planning Arsa <br /> <br />Managsment UnR 8 Is 8,942 acrss of public land <br />northeast of Delta that consists of Mancos shale <br />(adobe badlands) hills wRh little vegetative <br />cover. The area Is suitable and utilized for ORV <br />recreation. ORV actlvRles typically Involve local <br />residents and occur during the spring, fall, and <br />winter. <br /> <br />The management unR will be managed as open <br />to ORV use. Recreational and competRlve ORV <br />use and a high concentration of recreation users <br />will be permitted within the management unR. <br />FacllRles such as Informational signs and motor- <br />cycle loading ramps may be developed ff con- <br />structed and maintained to BlM standards by <br />local ORV organizations. A minimum of restric- <br />tions will be placed on surface-dlsturblng ac- <br />tlvRles that do not Impede or endanger ORV <br />recreatlonlsts. <br /> <br />Prior to management of ths area for ORV use, <br />an Inventory will be conducted to Identify <br />threatened and endangered plant populations. <br />The management unR's proposed boundary will <br />be adjusted to exclude threatened and en- <br />dangered plants. If plants or plant communities <br />cannot be excluded from the management unR, <br />protective fencing or other measures will be Im- <br />plemented to protect the plants. The USFWS will <br />be consulted. <br /> <br />livestock Grazing. Grazing use will continue <br />In the management unR but construction of <br />iacllRles, such as livestock control fencss, that <br /> <br />~. <br /> <br />Management Deelslona <br /> <br />create safety hazards or Impede free vehicle use <br />will not be permitted. <br /> <br />Visual Resources. The management unit will <br />be managed under VRM Class IV guidelines. <br /> <br />Major Utilities. The management unit will be <br />open to development of major utility iacllRles. <br /> <br />Fire Management. A total of 8,942 acres of <br />pUblic land will be managed under the fire sup- <br />pression category and Identffled as condRlonal <br />suppression areas. <br /> <br />MANAGEMENT UNIT 9 <br /> <br />6,320 Acres of Public SUrfacs; 1 percent of the <br />ths Planning Area <br /> <br />The public land riparian zones that comprise <br />Management Unit 9 occur throughout the plan- <br />ning area and are generally associated with <br />perennial or Intermittent streams. These areas <br />(6,320 acres) have a vsry high productive <br />capability and are very Important In maintaining <br />the water quality of the adjacent streams. <br /> <br />The management unR will be managed to rs- <br />stors and enhance riparian vsgstatlon along 40 <br />miles of streams. Objectives and projects <br />designed to accelerats Improvement of species <br />dlvsrslty, streambank cover and stability, and In- <br />stream structurs, and to raise the water table will <br />be Incorporated Into existing activity plans or <br />developed In new riparian/aquatic systsm <br />management plans. All areas will be Intensively <br />monitored for vegetation, aquatic habRat, and <br />erosion condRlons. <br /> <br />Coal. Coal development will be consIdered on <br />a site-specific basis after consultation with af- <br />fected entities and formulation of mitigating <br />measures. <br /> <br />Minerai Materials. Federal minerai estate will <br />be closed to disposal of minerai materials except <br /> <br />22 <br /> <br />/ <br />
