Issue: The diversion of water from the Arkansas River in connection
with~Fryingpan-Arkansas Project, according to the Colorado Division
of Wildlife, will result in sterilization of the Arkansas River to a
point near Twin Lakes, as a result of which fish will be unable to
sustain themselves in such portion of that river. The Bureau is urged
to give this problem its complete attention and consideration.

Raised by:

Name

Representin!\

William J. Gregory

Lake County Commissioners
(Undated Resolution)

Response:

Malta Diversion Dam and Canal have been deleted from the Project plans.
Originally, the Project planned to divert about 32,000 acre-feet of
water annually from the upper reaches of the Arkansas River and
convey the water via the Malta Canal to Mt. Elbert Canal. With the
Malta Diversion deleted from the plan, diversion of Arkansas River
flows will be reduced and consequently quality of the river will not
be greatly affected. Thus, the quality of the fishery of the Arkansas
River will not be greatly affected by the Project.

XI-442
