This assessm2nt of the probable effect of the <br /> <br />Narrows Unit on the quality of the human envi.rontr.ent rcflects the <br /> <br />, <br />vieHs and recolmnendations of those Federal and State agencies which <br /> <br />participated directly in formulating the recoITmended plan of deve10~nent <br /> <br />or indirectly through the review process. <br /> <br />(1) Impact on envirol11oent. 'The South Platte River watel:shed is <br /> <br />a broad rolling plain through which the river has formed a wide valley <br /> <br />of flood plains and bench lands on river terrains. 'rhe bench lands <br /> <br /> <br />. at'e situate" LOIn 20 to 200 feet higher than the flood plains. Tile <br /> <br /> <br />river has a gradient of 8 to 10 feet per mile. <br /> <br />The Unit area has a temperate climate with "leather characteristies <br /> <br />similar to those of the Hesterll Great Plains. The region is normally <br /> <br />semi-arid wi.th Hide1y' varying annual precipitation. 'fhi.s climate <br /> <br />prov~d~s abundant sunshine, with warm days and cool nights during the <br /> <br />growing .season, making the area especially favorable for agriculture <br /> <br />" and associated industries, although the natural precipitation is adequate <br /> <br />to support only highly speculative dry1and farming ~nd livestock grazing. <br /> <br />The natural stream environment has been altered since before <br /> <br />the turn of the century \lhen homestea.cls began tornake irdgation water <br /> <br />\ <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />importations and divet'si,ons, thus greatly altering thc flows of the <br />'South Platte River. <br /> <br />8 <br />
