Monitoring - Elective reaches, near standard rSMP reaches, will be
sampled each year using ISMp protocols. Four reaches will be identified
and sampled on a rotating 3-4 year schedule.

Population estimate - In 1998, we will begin a three year effort to
obtain a population estimate for the adult Colorado squawfish population
in the Middle and Lower Green River. I~ 1998, existing data and
possible techniques will be examined to determine the best approach to
obtain population estimates in the Middle and Lower Green River. This
may involve coordinating activities with USFWS population estimates on
the Colorado River to explore feasibility of using their techniques for
estimating populations. See ISMP handbook to be revised for more
detailed methods. In the future, sampling to obtain population
estimates could be coordinated to overlap with other sampling intensive
studies (e.g., 1997 and 1998 efforts with monitoring for razorback
sucker and nonnative fish removal; both of these studies will be using
trap nets which proved in 1996 to be very effective at capturing adult
Colorado squawfish) which should increase our sample size.

Humnback Chub

Monitoring - Westwater Canyon, Desolation/Gray Canyon, and Cataract
Canyon (RM's provided above) will be monitored during l sampling
trip/year with methods similar to those used in Aspinall/westwater
studies. These trips will occur in September (Westwater and Cataract)
or July (Desolation). See the ISMP handbook for more detailed methods.

Population estimate - In 1998, we will begin a three year effort to
obtain a population estimate for adult humpback chub population in
Westwater Canyon. This effort will consist of a trip/month from July to
October (4 trips) to PIT-tag adult humpback chub (>l75mm). Methods will
similar to those described above, except techniques will be geared
toward that capture of adult fish, instead of all life stages. We chose
Westwater Canyon for the first attempt at obtaining a "good" population
estimate in the Upper Basin for humpback chub because of the number of
fish present in the Canyon, the number of fish already marked, and the
knowledge that UDWR biologists have with this canyon. See the ISMP
handbook (to be revised) for more detailed methods.

VII. Task Description and Schedule (FY-l998):

Task l - Baseline ISMP efforts (current sampling protocols) .
Field work will be conducted using current ISMP handbook guidelines on
monitoring young-of-year, late juvenile and adult Colorado squawfish on
the Colorado, Green and White rivers. Field work will be conducted in
spring (April- May) and fall (September-October). Preserved YOY fishes
will be identified, catalogued and stored at the Larval Fish Lab in Ft.
Collins, Colorado. Data will be entered on the computer and transferred

3
