000514

10. Signing

.

Signing within the Management Area is in accordance with National Forest
signing policies and standards, Sufficient signs are installed to provide
adequate information and guidance to persons who may be unfamiliar with the
area, and to provide proper identification of National Forest System lands.
Traffic control signs that conform to National Standards have been installed
to regulate road traffic in the interest of public safety,

II. Winter Activities

Winter recreation opportunities exist at the McPhee Reservoir Management Area
through the winter months of October through April. These opportunities
include hunting, ice fishing, snowmobiling, cross-country skiing and
snowshoeing. Management of public use in these activities is as follows:

a, Winter Access

Motorized vehicle use is not permitted within wildlife management areas from
December I through April 30. This restriction applies to the entire House
Creek drainage, including developed sites, from the Dolores-Norwood Road to
Beaver Creek, and the east side of the management area from House Creek to
the town of Dolores. This restriction is necessary to minimize harassment of
wintering deer and elk in these areas.

Roads accessing the reservoir and development sites outside of the seasonal
closures will not be snow-plowed by the Forest Service, However, some of
these roads may be plowed by the County or others if winter activity use is
high enough to demand it. The roads accessing the Great Cut Dike and McPhee
Dams and the Dolores Tunnel will be plowed for project maintenance and
operation purposes which will provide limited access to the reservoir.

b. Ice Fishing

It is assumed that the McPhee Reservoir surface will freeze during a normal
winter season. Ice fishing will be allowed on the reservoir. However, use
will be limited by the availability of access points. Use will be monitored
bv the Colorado Division of Wildlife and the Forest Service to avoid
conflicts with wildlife.

c, Snowmobiling

Snowmobiling is restricted to the reservoir's frozen surface and to roads
outside of the seasonal closure areas.

d, Snowshoeing and Cross-Country Skiing

.

These activities are permitted throughout the Management Area except within
the seasonal closed wildlife management areas, where use is limited to winter
closed roads, and trails specifically designated to these uses. If future
use increases to a point that causes conflicts with wintering big game herds,
these winter activities may be curtailed in the wildlife management areas,

16
