'()02329

Task 4: "Identify compatible and incompatible uses of habitat"

In-channel Habitat Manaqement Methods

1. Scouring Flows - High flows of sufficient magnitude and
duration, prior to use by species of interest, could be used
to remove some annual and perennial vegetation from riverine
areas. Scouring flows rework bottom sediments and prevent
deposition of seeds.

~. Clearing can be used to enhance
some areas to provide roosting or nesting habitat for
species of interest.

3. Inundation Flows - Properly timed flows of sufficient volume
and duration could be used to drown seedlings or flush seeds
of encroaching vegetation.

4. Prescribed Burns - Repeated controlled burns could be used
on riverine areas, streamside areas, and sandbars to retard
encroachment of woody and herbaceous vegetation.

5. Chemical Control - Properly labeled and properly applied
herbicides could be utilized in some areas to retard *
encroachment of woody vegetation; no aerial application.

6. Regulated Grazing - Under some circumstances, livestock
grazing could be used to retard encroachment of woody and
herbaceous vegetation.

7. Sediment Supply and Transport - Adequate supplies of
sediments transported by flows of sufficient volume could
remove annual and perennial vegetation from riverine areas.

8. Instream Structures - Temporary low-head dams could be
constructed to drown in-channel vegetation. Channel blocks
and other structures could be constructed to redirect flows
to encourage erosion of sandbars and islands.

*
Currently, the Environmental Protection Agency is developing
pesticide use maps for endangered species on a nationwide basis.
The Fish and wildlife Service's Grand Island office has provided
comments (4/24/92 memo) on pesticide use maps for Interior Least
Tern, Piping Plover, Blowout Penstemon, and Western prairie
Fringed Orchid in Nebraska. The herbicide, Rodeo (a glyphosate),
is not one of the restricted pesticides listed on the pesticide
use maps. Presently, Rodeo is being used by at least one entity
managing land on the Platte River to control vegetation on
interior least tern/piping plover nesting islands.
