.800393

Title: Wang Migration

Background:
'This initiative affects a majority of our divisions and several critical production applications.
The department has two Wang VS minicomputers-a VSlOO and a VS300. The VSlOO
('n~nt1v hnncpc !':lIpplicationc tl..<;It C'lunoort tthA D;v;~;on nf n';ldli.f"" T <'Ire. nevt hr....'lll """'liP
..............\0. J" ....~_....... .... ..... &au Ul;:1.. ... t't' ... .... ...~......... 'OJ ..... I........ .L.A.I.... -^.L ......,'10.14.1. J~'
the CaRIS project will eliminate the need for this machine. The VS300 houses applications
that support the Colorado Oil and Gas Information Management System (COGIMS), Inactive
and Mined Land Information Systems (IIMUS) and the State Land Information Management
System (SUMS). These systems were developed and are maintained by outside consultants.
The Division of Water Resources has some applications that were developed in-house and
reside on the VS300. Migrating to a new operating environment must include the
participation and cooperation of all parties in order to be successful and to ensure minimum
disruption to our customers,

Progress:
We have accelerated activities regarding the removal from service of the Wang VSlOO aI the
Division of Wildlife. Moving the applications that support Great Outdoors Colorado and Big
Game Drawings to the VS300 is currently being analyzed. The completion of this effort
coupled with the progress being made in CaRIS may allow us to retire the VSlOO before the
end of the calendar year.

We are fInalizing an agreement with an outside consultant to conduct a business needs
analysis for the State Board of Land Commissioners. This system (SUMS) currently resides
on the VS300. Instead of making modifications to the existing system we wish to identify
opportunities to reexamine the business requirements of the Board. The needs have
substantially changed since the system was'implemented originally.

Summary:
The analysis for the Land Board will also tie directly to the business needs of the Oil and
Gas Commission. Any recommendations will take into account informational needs of both
divisions. Recommendations to upgrade these systems will adhere to departmental
information technology standards and guidelines to ensure integration,
