.,

Title: Geographic Information Systems (GIS)

Background:
Adopting departmental standards for GIS will play an important part in Ihe Tactical Plan
during Ihe next two to three years. All DNR divisions participating in GIS have readily
accepted Ihe decision to use ESRI's ARC/INFO and ARC/VIEW to develop Iheir layers of
Ihe GIS. Implementing Ihese standards present opportunities for linking departmental, as
well as data from other state agencies and the federal government.

Progress:
A draft Memorandum of Understanding (MOD) between the U.S. Department of Ihe Interior,
Bureau of Land Management and the State has been written by members of Ihe DNR
Technical Users Group with assistance from the Colorado Departments of Transportation,
Health and Loca1 Affairs. The MOU has been created to establish a process whereby
federal, state and local governments can share data among agencies.

Working through the Colorado Geographic Information Coordinating Committee (GlCC) we
have identified compatibility of software systems among all the key parties. 1bis fact
presents opportunities to share data across jurisdictional boundaries and to take advantage of
significant data collection efforts, in addition to the cost savings associated with such tasks.

Summary:
A joint effort between DNR, the Department of Transportation, the Department of HealIh
, ,
and the Department of Loca1 Affairs is underway to obtain a common "base map" from
Petroleum Information (PI) Corporation that includes recent mapping updates. We are also
coordinating development efforts with the CRDSS staff to ensure compatibility with this
project.
