This duration allowed the recharge
operation to begin in February prior to the spring migration of the whooping
crane in early March. The influence of the recharge basin was investigated in
300 foot intervals out to a distance of 1500 feet from the center of the basin.
Several different basin geometries were investigated including square
and rectangular basins. For a given constant recharge rate of 4 feet per day, a
long narrow rectangular basin resulted in more substantial additions to the
groundwater table at large distances from the center of the basin. The most
effective set of dimensions for the rectangular basin was a lenoth of 1000 feet
and a width of 5 feet. The exact orientation of the basin within the Rowe
Sanctuary site is shown in Figure 4. The width of the basin must be oriented
perpendicular to the south channel of the Platte River as illustrated in Figure 2,
the definition sketch for recharge with a rectangular basin.
The effects of the constant recharge of the rectangular basin were
calculated along a vertical plane that was at some angle with a line drawn
perpendicularly from the center of the recharge basin to the stream. Hence, an
angle of zero degrees represents the vertical plane along the length of the basin.
An angle of 90 degrees represents a vertical plane that slices through the center
of the recharge basin. The resulting groundwater mound was calculated out to a
distance of 1500 feet in both directions from the center of the basin along this
vertical plane. Figure 6 illustrates this vertical plane concept.
Figure 6: Orientation of Vertical Plane for Recharge Analysis

Vertical Plane
Through Basin
Center

Angle of Plane
from
Perpendicular

III
o
C
-I
:I:
o
:I:
:I>
Z
Z
m
r-
"ll
S
-I
m
;0
<:
m
;0

18
