.

.

;'

Present efficiency of water for irrigation is very low. Host of the
snow malt runoff occurs during the month of May. Aftel" June 1 stre&rnflOlf
is unst&ble, Y'esul ting in little or no irrigation "ate!:' managemant. The
water is used when it is available and not when the crop needs it.

Other Agricultural Water Managemant

Controlled release rates from the reservoir storage will reduce
high water tables and induce ground water recharge which would be an
incidental effect of the project.

Nonagricultural Water Hanagemant

Public recreational and public fish and wildlife developmant are
objectives of the sponsors. Preliminary study of watershed yield indicates
there is not sufficient water to provide a full water supply to the
total irrigated acres. Recreation storage can be included in the plan
if a sponsoring group agrees to pay the construction and water cost for
this additional storage. The present stream flow down to about Saguachei
provides an excellent year-round sport fishery.

The reservoir storage for irrigation without recreational develop-
ment will provide incidental recreational opportunities to the public.

/

~Iater Rights

Saguache Creek is a tributary to no stream, nor has it any compact
commi tmants. The owners of surface flow rights will have to change these
rights to storage rights through the court.

There are irrigation wells below the Town of Saguache which supplemant
the direct flow rights. These wells are good producers and continued
use is expected.

Character and Scope of Project

Structural Measures Needed

Although three sites have been surveyed, only one major site has
been considered.

Project measures needed include a multi-purpose irrigation stol"age
and floodwater retarding structure and about 40 miles of stream and
canal rehabilitation for irrigation water management.

/'
(

The reservoir will have a total capacity of about 15,250 acre-feet
of which 9,000 acre-feet is irrigation storage; 5,500 acre-feet is flood-
water retention storage; and 750 acre-feet is sediment storage. The
proposed reservoir is in the upper watershed on Saguache Craek in Sec. 36,
T45N, R4E. 4~bcut 'I-SO acres ar-e i,,;equiwu for the pool araa. "the dam
and emergency spillway will occupy about 26 acres. An additional borrow
area of &bout 550 acres will be required.
6

06'71

i
