~, .

.

.

In fact, during the Past half year, the Bureau of Reclamation
has carried out a study which reveals that over the Vlest as a whole, the
computable economic value of recreation and of fish-anti-wildlife enhance-
ment provided at Reclamation reservoirs arr~unts to at least ~J6 million
a year. As a result of this study. we now know that recreation is more
than merely an incidental benefit from Reclamation; it is a full-fledged
majOl' benefit in its own right.
This benefit is now yours. Bonny Dam is working for you today
as it backs up the water to fill your lake and guardS the pass through
which the invading floods have come. It Will work for ;you in greater
measure in the future as you tap its waters for irrigation. It will do
still more work as the other features of the Missouri River Basin Project
rise to join hands vnth it in a concerted effort of teamwork.
In time, we Will Win in the Missouri project some 2-1/2 million
ldlowatts of hydro power--enough to bu.ild up and drive five industrial
metropolitan centers like San Francisco. Scattered throughout the Basin
and made available to all its people!;. these kilowatts will make possible
the establishment of enterprises of dozens of kinds--processing plants,
pachng plants, canneries, mim.ng, mills, and more others than we can
think of. They Will make better liVing possible in towns and on
farms. They will create jobs and opportunities.
And in time, we will bnng water to more than 6 million acres,
multiplying their yield and value, and iilcreasing both the amount and
the variety of the products they will grow. V'ith a greater variety of
higher-yield products, the area Will attain a greater stability and a
higher level of basic agricultural earning power than it has ever had.

2484

7
