<br />,l 00:;' 768 <br /> <br />, <br /> <br />i, <br /> <br />CLOSED RASIN DI~!SION <br />- <br /> <br />The commencement of construction of the Closed Basin Drain is <br />contingent on (a) conciusive finding of justification therefor on <br />the casis of cost a~d the quantity and quality of water to ce <br />secUl'ed, and, (c) making: of adequate arrangements, in the' opinion of <br />the Secretary, for maintenance of the drain (Act of June 18, 1940, <br />qh. 395, 54 Stat. 406.) <br /> <br />The contemplated works would consist of an open drain some 35 <br />miles in length, extending from Saguache Creek to the Rio Grande, <br />the main purpose of the drain being to augment the flow of the Rio <br />~rande by means of drainage return from the Closed Basin, and hence <br />permi t an equa.l amount of Rio Grande water to ce used in the San Lui s <br />Valley. <br /> <br />Gaging of surface inflow to the Closed Basin area was carried <br />on throughout,the month as climatic conditions permitted. <br /> <br />j <br />] <br />, j <br /> <br />Test well drilling: was in progrsss throughout the month. <br /> <br />WEMINUCHE DIVISION <br /> <br />The authorized worke of the Weminuche Division will provide <br />for the diversion of e~ average of about 24,000 acre-feet of water <br />annually from the Colorado River Basin for use as a supplemental <br />supply to the Rio Grande Division of the Project. <br /> <br />,~ <br />~ <br /> <br />Preliminary surveys have been completed. <br /> <br />Water supply studies are being reviewed and stream gagings <br />are being continued. <br /> <br />, , <br /> <br />COLORADO - RIO GRANDE PROJECT INVESTIGATIOnS <br />, <br /> <br />I <br />! <br />~ <br />, <br /> <br />The Colorado-Rio Grande Project Investigations are studies of <br />the potentialities of diverting waters surplus to the Colorado River <br />.Basin to the Upper Rio Grande Besin to provide a supplemental irri- <br />gation supply for presently irrigated lands and full supply for new <br />lands in the San Luis Valley, Colorado. ,The plan of development <br />includes' diverting. water across or under the Continental Divide <br />from the Piedra, Animas and Gunnison Rivers. <br /> <br />Approximately 40 miles of preliminary canal lines have been <br />traversed, profiled and contoured in connection with the Piedra-Rio <br /> <br />I <br />,. <br />f <br />I <br /> <br />-2- <br />
