Riparian areas consist of <br />riparian ecosystems, aquatLc ecosystems, and wetlands. <br /> <br />2526.02 - Objectives. To protect, manage, and improve <br />riparian areas while implementing land and resource <br />management activities. To manage riparian areas in the <br />context of the environment in which they are located, <br />recognizing their unique values. <br /> <br />2526.03 - Policy <br /> <br />1. Manage riparian areas in relation to various legal <br />mandates, inCluding, but not limited to those associated <br />with floodplains, wetlands, water quality, dredged and fill <br />material, endangered species, wild and scenic rivers, and <br />cultural resources. <br /> <br />2. Manage riparian areas under the principles of <br />mUltiple-use and sustained-yield, while emphasizing pro- <br />tection and improvement of soil, water, vegetation, and <br />fish and wildlife resources. Give preferential considera- <br />tion to riparian dependent resources when conflicts among <br />land use activities occur. <br /> <br />3. Delineate and evaluate riparian areas prior to <br />implementing any project activity. Determine geographic <br />boundaries of riparian areas by onsitecharacteristics of <br />water, soil, and vegetation. <br /> <br />4. Give attention to land along all stream channels <br />capable of supporting riparian vegetation (36 CFR 219.27e). <br /> <br />5. Give special attention to land and vegetation for <br />approximately 100 feet from the edges of all perennial <br />streams, lakes, and other bodies of water. This distance <br />shall correspond to at least the recognizable area domi- <br />nated by the riparian vegetation (36 CFR 2l9.27el. Give <br />special attention to adjacent terrestrial areas to assure <br />adequate protection for the riparian dependent resources. <br /> <br />*-FSM 3/86 AMEND 48-* <br />
