A description of the health
of a watershed or portion thereof in terms of the factors
which affect hydrologic function and soil productivity.

2. Hydrologic Function. The behavioral characteris-
tics of a watershed described in terms of ability to
sustain favorable conditions of water flow. Favorable
conditions of water flow are defined in terms of water
quality, quantity, and timing.

3. Soil productivity. The inherent capacity of a soil
for supporting growth of specified plants, plant communi-
ties, or sequence of plant communities.

4. Potential. The inherent capability of a watershed,
or portion thereof, to produce biomass and function hydro-
logically as determined by physical, chemical, and bio-
logical factors.

e

5. Tolerance. The point beyond which there is high
risk that potential may be permanently impaired through
changes in specified physical, chemical, and biological
factors brought about by management activities or natural
even ts.

,

6. Watershed Condition Class. The condition of a
watershed relative to its potential and tolerance (FSM
2521.2).

2521.1 - Watershed Condition Classes. Measure watershed
condition by acres and group into one of the following
three classes:

e

1. Class I Condition. Watershed condition is at or
above potentlal.

2. Class II Condition. Watershed condition is below
potential but can be improved by applied management or
improvement measures.

3. Class III Condition. Watershed condition is at or
below tolerance.

e

*-FSM 3/86 AMEND 48-*
