n0123S

r-""-

scale approximately 3"= 1 mile.

In Nebraska from the &l:ate Line to the eastern b.order of

Morrill County, all of the private lands under canals ware checked

by use of mosaics of aerial pictures, scale 1" = lOOot. Coverame

in Garden County was made by use of index sheets of aerial prints

only, scale approxilll9.tely 1" = I mile. Irrigation development in

this seotion of the river has been rather small and any error in

classification because of using index sheets would not be substan-

tial. Contacj: prints covering the irrigated areas ware used in

Keith and Lincoln Counties. Considerable seeped and sub-irrigated

land was fO\md below Bridgeport widch was classified separately.

The field checking disclosed many small pumping operations.

There are. no records of decrees in the Nebraska biennial reports for

IllOst of these operations. Most of the pumping operations observed

in Sootts'Hluff and Morrill Counties were from natural channels or

drains in which the water would have returned to the main river.

Such practices would be in violation of irrigation laws in Colorado

y' but apparently are permitted in Nebraska.

The tributaries were DIOre difficult to check than the

main river areas. The DIOst important ones. namely Horse Creek.

(including the Hawk Springs Project), Pumpkin Creek. Blue Creek and

BirdWood.. Creek ware observed and estimates made of the total area

irrigated. Our estimates indicated that the extent and type of agri-

culture was substantially as represented by other agencies.

In determining the inflow of HOMre Creek into Nebraska

our observations disclosed that the flow at ,the gaging station near

L~. Nebraska could not be used because of the drain which enters

Horse Creek be'\:ween the state line and the gaging station. This

-4-
