00J716

VII. LOWER SOUTH PLATTE RIVER AQUATIC RESOURCE MANAGEMENT
RECOMMENDATIONS:

A. Intensive Management Waters:

1. No change in current management is anticipated.
Trout will continue to be used in this management category in
conjunction with warmwater put and grow stocking or natural
recruitment of warmwater game fish. Catchable trout will be
utilized to provide early spring, fall and winter sportfishing
opportunity and to augment spring and summer warmwater sport
fisheries.

3.Recently instituted special fishing regulations for
warmwater sportfish in Jackson Reservoir will be evaluated. Length
limits for walleye and wiper (15 inch minimum) will be evaluated
from population biology and angler satisfaction perspectives to
determine if these regulation strategies should remain in effect,
be terminated or expanded to include other northeast plains
reservoirs.

B. Optimum Management Waters:

1.
continue to
sportfish.

Based
manage

on resource potential and
mixed species assemblages

public input,
of warmwater

2. Evaluate recently instituted special fishing
regulations in Julesburg Reservoir. Minimum length limits for
walleye, wiper (15 inch minimum) and crappie (10 inch minimum) will
be evaluated from population biology and angler satisfaction
perspectives to determine if these regulation strategies should
remain in effect, be terminated or expanded to other optimum
management waters.

3. Use catchable trout to enhance angling opportunities
in early spring, fall and winter. This initiative will only be
possible if new catchable trout production becomes available, which
does not appear probable in the foreseeable future. If available,
catchable trout would be stocked in spring, fall or both seasons in
limited numbers. stocking rates would be well below those used in
intensive management waters thus maintaining the primary management
objectives for the optimum use,category.

4. Negotiate and secure lease agreements on selected
waters as new opportunities become available or existing leases
expire. Target length for any new lease' agreements will be a

16
