PUBLIC ISSUES/CONFLICT AND OPTIONS FOR MANAGEMENT

WATERS MANAGED FOR SPORTFISHING

From 1991-92, the 'Division of Wildlife conducted an intensive
pUblic input process which primarily dealt with sportfish
management programs at the four large irrigation impoundments in
the basin managed for public fishing. The input process
specifically focused on Jackson, prewitt, North Sterling and
Julesburg Reservoirs. During 1991, fisherman at these reservoirs
were asked to complete a brief questionnaire to indicate their
preferred fish management options for these reservoirs. The
questionnaire contained 6 questions and was distributed to
fisherman at each reservoir during the 1991 fishing season.
Approximately two thousand questionnaires were distributed, however
only 182 responses were received for summarization. Results of the
fisherman attitude survey are shown in Appendix 2.

I

WATERS MANAGED FOR NATIVE AOUATIC WILDLIFE

PUblic awareness of native aquatic wildlife in the lower South
Platte River basin and of management concerns associated with this
resource is minimal. However, in consultation with the U.S. Fish
and wildlife service, other federal agencies, environmental groups,
the water user and development community, and state and local
governmental entities, the Division is aware of a number of issues
regarding native aquatic wildlife. They include:

1. Current status of native fish, amphibian, molluso, and
crustacean fauna in the basin and the need for a current
inventory.

2. Documentation of any substantial decline in native fish,
amphibian, mollusk, and crustaoean fauna which could lead
to consideration of threatened or endangered listing.

3. Potential listing of threatened or endangered species
could have great impaot on water and land management or
development in the basin.

4. Implementation of management aotions for reo overy or
enhanoement of selected rare species will most likely
ooour on privately-owned lands.

5. Revenue sources and allocation of Division resources to
nongame aquatio wildlife management.

15
