00l~13

.

that time drained the area which has since been captured by Anthracite

Creek. In the area thus captured is the south slope at the end of the

Ruby Range, and there are also several tributaries draining the north

slope of the Anthracite Range, all of which are important sources of

supply to Anthracite Creek.

The principal tributary strenm fonning the head of Anthracite

Creek rises in Robinson Basin, on the east slopes of Ruby Peak ond Mount

Owen, the most southerly sunnni ts of the Ruby Range. This strecm flows

south and somewhat east into and through Leke Brenmm which is situated

one mile north of the highway on Kebler Pass. The stream enters the north

end of the leke and leaves midway of the wast side through n steep conon

deeply cut in solid rock.

At the south end of the leke n dike of slmnp and outwash mater~

ial which come from the hif',her ground to the east closes the basin which

fonns the lrJce and although only nbout 10 feet higher than present water

level fonns the divide from the Coal CNek drainage. The detrial material

is deeper than the old lako level end appears to have closed the vc.lley

~own which this stream originally flowed ns the head of Coal Creek. The

water wns then held until a new outlot from the lake on the west side

discharged the water into Anthraci to Creek. The orea nbove LI".ke Brennon

thus captured by Anthracite Creek is 3.24 square miles.

Water SUpplY Records

There are no records of runoff of Coal Creek. No record has

over bean kept of the inrlol! to, or doily use from, the Crested Butte

water aystan.

Runoff of Anthracite Creek has been measured at the following

.

.

-6-
