Years of such shortage are often those when

wj.nter Gnow c::,>ver is extremely light, and under such conditions, danger

of the strenm freezin~ solid increases greatly. A surplus of water to

insure the delivery of the water actually needed seems just as necessary

as wnter for the actual consumption.

WATER SUPPLY

.

Coal Creek

Coal Creek: rises at the southeast end of the Ruby Range, about

7 miles west of Crested Butte. The drainage area is a wide basin, near-

ly square, closed at the west end by ridges at about 10,000 feet eleva-

tion which join the Ruby Range and Anthracite Range to the southwest.

Scarp Ridge an outlier of Ruby Range running southeast, and over 12,000

feet high, bounds Coal Creek: basin on the north, and Mount Axtell and

Anthracite Range, \mich, except at Ohio Pass, are fully as high bound

Coal Creek: on the south. The drainage area abovs the intek:e of the town

water system is 12.55 squars miles.

Anthraci te Creek: and Lcl!:e Brennan

West of Coal Creek: on the opposite side of the low ridge in

whi ch Kebler Pass is situated, end whi ch connects Anthracite and Ruby

Ranges, the numerous tributaries of ~thracite Creek rise. Anthracite

Creek: flows gensrtllly northwest and with Muddy Creek: foms North Fork

of Gunnison River about 25 miles from its source. From the topography

of the country it seems probable that the head of Anthracite Creek: was

once about two miles west of its present location and that Coal Creek at

.

-5-
