....

0.0 0 612

..

.

Following completion of the pump testing and leaky aquifer testing we

will construct models of the system based on the information gathered in

the testing phase of the definite plan studies. We would hope to confirm

by these models the capacities and spacing of wells in the stage 1

portion of the project. We will also construct a water quality model to

predict the quality of water that could be delivered to the Rio Grande.

As you are aware" Article III of the Rio Grande Compact limits salvaged

waters which can. be credited to Colorado as a part of its compact require-

ments. The perc;ent of sodium ions must be less than 45 when the TDS

exceeds 350 p/m in the salvaged water.

The act authorizes the Secretary to improve the Rio Grande channel as a

part of the Closed Basin Division. This improvement will begin at the

mouth of the Main Conveyance Channel and extend to the Colorado-New

Mpxir.o st;:at.P. liMP. Tt will ARAlIYP r~Try1"! We have scheduled approximately 10 months for the
channel rectification studies of the definite plan report, because the

channel rectification was included in the project au~horization on the

basis of very preliminary and brief consideration. No report of this

consideration was published. We do not know the 'capacity of the river

to accept the salvaged waters, but expect that very little channel
rectification work will physically be done on the river. Channel
rectification implies a lesser amount of -work than channelization, and

we expect to keep all river channel modifications to the absolute mini-

mum. We anticipate a minimum number of Kellner-type jetties would be

10
