I'
1

,090611

.

.

anticipate continuous monitoring of the water levels to gain a back-

ground of inforuation on which to base the project operation.

Another item of high priority is to drill and pump test wells. This

would involve pump testing from wells constructed specifically for this

purpose which hopefully could later be used for production wells. The

pump tests will determine the aquifer characteristics such as trans-

missivity, specific yield, storage coefficient, etc., for the aquifer.

Specific yield is the amount of water yielded from water-bearing material

by gravity drainage. The storage coefficient is the volume of water an

aquifer releases from or takes into storage, per unit surface area of

the aquifer, per unit change in head. For unconfined aquifers it is

virtually equal to specific yield. These values can be determined by

continuous pumping at a constant rate over a period of several days and

'-... ---------_..,.....
"') .................... .............J

c~~z~;i~g ~~=~~;~t~on ~~ll~ ~~~=~~~~i~o t~=

.......nw"Ioa,.:r
'-"'-r --

well to measure drawdowns. In connection with this testing we wouJ.d

also perform leaky aquifer tests. These tests are simply pump tests

with observation wells also in the artesian aquifer. These tests ~7ill

measure the effect on t~'.e artesian aquifer from pumping the shallow

aquifer. We do not expect that waters of the artesian aquifer will be

affected by pumping from the shallow aquifer. About the middle of

fiscal year 1976 we would also initiate water quality monitoring from

the observation well network. This monitoring will be continued through-

out the preconstruction, construction and operation phases of the Closed

Basin Division.

9
