,

.

.

.

..

,

Task 3:

Denlop Design Criteria

Objective:

To develop design criteria for the endangered fish hatchery.

Responsibility:

All team members will contribute to this task.

Methodology:

Development of the design criteria for the proposed hatchery will be accomplished
jointly by the project team to utilize the experience of each member in their field of
expertise. The criteria will be reviewed and integrated to achieve a unified, workable
hatchery design. The following sections describe the methodology for determining the
necessary criteria for key hatchery components:

1. Biological design and culture techniques based on fish life stage requirements:
Information will be assimilated from literature and applied, with project team
expertise, to evaluate design needs based on known life history requirements.

2, Site requirement criteria will be based on proximity to wild populations, good
water Quality, and the effects of climate and temperature. Project team
biologists will utilize their expertise regarding endangered fish and the proposed
sites to select appropriate criteria. Engineering site requirement criteria such
as land area and topographic needs, geologic suitability, availability of support
utilities, proximity to support services, etc. will be determined by the project
team based upon the needs of the proposed facility and the experience of the
project team in economical and efficient site development.

3. Research facility needs identified in Task 2 will be applied to design criteria to
satisfy these needs, e.g. multiple feeding troughs to assess various diets.

4. Operation and maintenance criteria will be determined largely from conferences
with personnel from the Dexter and Willow Beach National Fish Hatcheries and
the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

5, Visitor/education center criteria will be based on excellent examples of visitor
center facilities currently existing at various hatcheries throughout the country;
information on these will be collected and coordinated with the goals of the
CWCB for the proposed hatchery.

6. Water Quality, water supply/heating criteria will be based upon knowledge of
the physical and chemical reQuirements of the species, together ",ith the
experiences of the Dexter and Willow Beach National Fish Hatcheries.

7, Waste treatment facility criteria will be based upon existing criteria for
conventional hatcheries currently in operation, The team will coordinate with
the Colorado Department of Health-Water Quality Control Division,

Work Products:

A Task Report containing detailed narrative of specific hatchery design criteria will
be provided for review and approval by the Technical Advisory Committee before
proceeding with the remaining tasks,

5
