Creek. All of these springs are relatively small; water is collected
in pipes and ditches which tie into the main collection pipe.
Palisade Reservoirs #1 and #3 essentially serve as holding ponds.
Seepage from these reservoirs feed springs located below the
reservoirs.

I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I

The springs in the Cottonwood Creek\Sink Creek drainages are in
two groups: Kruzen Springs are located at an elevation between 9000
and 9200 feet and the Cottonwood Creek springs are located between
7000 and 7600 feet. The Kruzen Springs produce by far the largest
volume of all the springs in the Palisade system. It also produces
very high quality water.

c.

Surf~l"P. Int~ ke~. There are 8 surface intakes on the upper basin of
Rapid Creek and 3 surface intakes on the upper basin of Cottonwood
Creek. The Rapid Creek diversions are, again, located in 3 clusters:
the Upper Diversion, the Middle Diversion, and the Lower
Diversion. The Cottonwood Creek diversions are all located between
elevation of 7000 to 7600 feet. All of the diversions are simple
concrete structures placed across the stream with a headgate allowing
diversion of water to a pipeline.

In addition to these diversions, the Town of Palisade has previously
diverted water from C<lttonwood Creek and Rapid Creek at locations
further downstream. They do not do so at present because the water
quality in the two streams deteriorates rapidly as it passes through
the lower elevations (see Section IV-D). However, they do plan to
install lower elevation diversions on both streams in case of
interruptions along the pipelines. It should be noted that some of
the original water rights which the Town claims were surface
diversions at lower elevations. The point of diversions for these
water rights has been moved into the upper basins above 7000 feet.

d.

Upper R:l~in Pipeline Collection System. The Town has an
extensive network of pipelines and ditches in the upper basin which
convey water from the various springs, surface diversions, and
smaller reservoirs (Figure IV-5). Raw water in the Rapid Creek
basin can be either conveyed to Cabin Reservoir or to a pipeline
which extends down Rapid Creek. In the Cottonwood Creek basin,
there is a long pipeline which extends up to Kruzen Springs. This
water can either be diverted directly into Cabin Reservoir or down
the Cottonwood Creek pipeline. Two diversions on Cottonwood
Creek go directly into Cabin Reservoir.

IV-6
