I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I

3.0 CORTEZ-TOWAoe PIPELINE

3.1 General

The principal feature of the Towaoc Municipal Project is the pipeline to
convey water from the City of Cortez treatment pl ant to the Town of Towaoc.
The straight line distance between the point of origin to the terminus of the
pipeline is 16.5 miles. The length of the final design alignment ultimately
selected will obviously be greater than that, depending on the final route
selected. There is a wide range of excavation conditions along the way,
ranging from rock to swamps, and also great variation in land use, including
residential, commercial, irrigated agricultural, and range land.

Ouring the initial years of pipeline operation the Tribe's water will be
treated by the City of Cortez and the entire line and terminal storage near
Towaoc will contain treated water. Either the Tribe or the City of Cortez may
terminate the treatment agreement, in which case the Tribe would probably
build a treatment facility on the Reservation. The pipeline would then be
converted to a raw water 1 i ne by tyi ng di rect1y into the Oolores Canal/Col"tez
supply line. There is adequate capacity to serve both the City of Cortez and
Towaoc through this 3.5-mile pipeline, which is ~4 and 30 inches in diamet~r.

While available terminal storage volume is a factor in sizing the pipeline for
ultimate use, the additional storage does not have to be added at the present
time in order to serve the existing municipal demands. Alternatives \~hich
include additional storage facilities and create several pressure and service
zones in the Towaoc region have numerous advantages, and will be addressed in
Chapter 4.0 as possible Towaoc municipal improvements.

This chapter presents the basis for the feasibility design of the pipeline and
includes alignment alternatives, pipe sizing, suitable pipe types, controls
and metering, and cost estimates for making comparisons among design options.

3-1

l060c
