I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I

The elevated 55,000 gallon tank was constructed in 1930 by Chicago Bridge and

Iron. It is a Horton tank with a common 8-inch fill and discharge pipe. The

8-inch line has an 8-inch gate valve instal1ed in a valve pit at the base of

the riser pipe. Pressure readings indicate that the full water level in the

tank is approximately 115 feet above ground leve1. The tank has received

numerous mai~tenance and painting applications since construction. Since 1967

the Town has been under a continuing maintenance contract with Maguire Iron

Preserving Co., Sioux Falls, South Dakota to inspect, repair, and paint the

tank every three years. The latest tan~ painting' was performed in the spring

of 1975 and was considered by the Council to be a sub-standard and poor quality

job. rue tank appears to be in relatively good condition and with protection

and maintenance can continue to give storage service for many years. The

155,000 gal10n underground storage tank is located immediately west of the

elevated tank as shown on Plate I. The tank is equipped with float controls

which operate well pump No.Js land 3. Water from the underground storage is

pU3ped to the elevated tank and the mains by a booster pump located in the

underground pit in back of City Hall. The booster pump is a Berkeley Hodel

No. H689GW centrifical pump with a 4" suction and a 3JJ discharge. The pump is

powered by a Gould century, 25 HP, 60 cycle, 3-phase motor, operating at 3500

RPM direct drive. It is estimated that the pump will deliver approximately

550 gallons per minute at a total head of 140 feet. The pump is equipped

with suction and discharge valves .and is controlled by a Hercoid pressure

control. The pump discharge to the distribution system is unmetered.

As far as meeting fire flow requirements, the 155,000 gallon under-

ground storage cannot be included in the total storage capacity. In order

to include the underground storage, the pump system would have to be a

duplex-unit with an auxiliary power supply with automatic start-up controls.

Even then, the system might not be graded as completely "reliable" and a

-22-
