The district serves an area approximately 25 miles north and <br /> <br />south and 20 miles east and west. The school system serves an enrollment <br /> <br />of approximately 430 students with 48% being bused in from the rural <br /> <br />area. <br /> <br />Bennett is commercially undeveloped and currently does not have any <br /> <br />industrial activity. There are a few local businesses, mostly of a service <br /> <br />nature. Like most rural towns in the area, the predominate structure in <br /> <br />town in the grain elevator company's storage bins. <br /> <br />The Town owns and operates its own water system and maintains its own <br /> <br />street network. Fire protection is provided by a volunteer fire depart~ <br /> <br />ment composed of 50 members from the Bennett and Watkins area. Police <br /> <br />protection is provided by a contract agreement with the Adams County <br /> <br />Sheriff's office. Sewer s~rvice is provided by an independent sanitation <br /> <br />district. The district serves all of the existing homes and businesses. <br /> <br />LLe system should be capable of extending and expanding its facilities <br /> <br />to include all land within the Town limits and some areas beyond the Town <br /> <br />limits. <br />The Town currently owns only three major pieces of equipment for joint <br /> <br />use by the water and street departments. The equipment consists of a <br /> <br />backhoe, a mo~orgrader, and a dump truck. All three items were used <br /> <br />equipment when purchased and the age is reported as "unknown" and "old." <br /> <br />The equipment condition is reported as "poor" and needs frequent repairs <br /> <br />and maintenance to keep it operational. <br /> <br />-6- <br />
