11-18

;

In 1973 a 6-inch plastic line was installed from the storage tank
to the new Willow Heights distribution system. The town maintains and
operates this sytem. Willow Heights is a part of the Town of Hotchkiss.
(See Figure 2.)

An old 4-inch cast iron pipe leads from the tank to the town's pri-
mary water distribution system, connecti~g into the system at 2nd
and Orchard. The fourth line is a 6-inch cast iron line leading south
from the water tank to Duke Hill. From there it enters the business
area system at Bridge and C Streets.

.

Most of the delivery system in the town was originally installed as
4-inch cast iron pipe. Due to the original pipe being unlined, a
high water table, and moderately corrosive soil conditions, these
cast iron pipes have deteriorated. About 50% of the original lines

have been replaced with plastic pipe in recent yea rs. The approxi-
, .. mate in-town pipeline lengths are as follows:
6- nch PVC (Class 200) 2,000 feet
4- nch PVC (Class 160) 5,000 feet
3- nch PVC 2,000 feet
2- nch PVC 230 feet
6- nch C. I. 2,400 feet
4- nch C. I. 14,000 feet
2- nch Steel 1,100 feet
I!- nch Steel 1,100 feet
Total Length = 25,820 feet

The first 4,000 feet of PVC (polyvinyl chloride) pipe was laid with
solvent weld joints. Recently all of the PUC pipe has been laid with
a-ring joints.

From October 30, 1975, through January 10, 1975, a period of 73 days,
there were seven major breaks in the distribution system. All seven
breaks involved were on the old cast iron pipe. These breaks were
located as follows:

.

.
