,
.

11-17

,

clean the filter material. The filter material has been changed at
least once since the construction of the facility. Backwash water
is supplied from the 0.4 mg steel tank and usually takes a minimum
of 20 minutes. The backwash water is discharged to an open field
below the filter.

Clear Water Storage

From the water treatment plant water flows by gravity to the town's

existing 400,000-galJon water storage tank. This clear water

storage facility appears to be in good repair from an outside in-

spection. At one time cathodic protection rods were placed

in the tank. (Dozens of old cathodes can be seen around the tank.)

At the current time the tank has no cathodic protection, and there

is a potential for corrosion.

.

The elevation of the tank is at 5620, approximately 300 feet above
the main business zone in Hotchkiss. Potential pressure head at
the City Hall would be 130 pounds per square inch (psi).

Distribution System

The water distribution system of Hotchkiss presently contains two

pressure zones regulated by two pressure reducing valves. These

zones are shown on Drawing No.2. They are described as follows:

Upper Pressure Zone - Lower Barrow Mesa including Knob Hill,

Willow Heights, and Duke Hill.

Lower Pressure Zone - Service area pf the town of HotchkLss

south of the 0 & R G W RR tracks.

.

Four water supply lines leave the clear water storage tank. One

is a 4-inch line to the east which serves Hanson Mesa. This line

has a master meter. Following the meter, the Hanson Mesa Water

Company maintains the water distribution lines. The town has

agreed to deliver up to 200,000 gallons per month to Hanson Mesa.

Hotchkiss's obligations cease at the master meter.
