The Erkenbeck lateral which takes off from the Farmers Irrigation Ditch

is concrete lined. A good example of a major canal that has a concrete lining

is the Consolidated Home Supply Ditch. This ditch is five (5) miles north of the

Highland Lateral and Farmers Ditch. This ditch has some problems due to the im-

proper construction of a foundation but, basically does a good job. Sections of

ditch that were not constructed properly are now deteriorating and require repair.

Other sections were installed properly and appear to be holding up well. We esti-

mate that 'a properly installed concrete lined irrigation ditch will have a minimum

life span of fifty (50) years.

To insure a maximum life span, we believe that the ditch should be designated

and constructed with the following considerations, some of which have already

been mentioned:

1. Proper Foundation: The only' way that a ditch can be expected to
have a long life is if a proper foundation is built. A good foun-
dation must be properly shaped and the soils, when properly com-
pacted, must be of a. toype which w;lll not .experience large amounts
of expansion and contractions. Adequate surface drainage must be
provided to prevent water from being trapped behind sidewalls and
expanding when frozen.

2. Proper Concrete Construction: The concrete mixture must be such
that it can endure winter's freeze and summer's wear. We believe
that the minimum compressive strength of the concrete should be
3,000 p.s.i. and that air entrainment be specified. The amount
of air entrainment should be specified by the design engineer
and Type II cement should be used.

The proper design of the foundation should be based on the evaluation of an ex-

perienced soils engineer as previously mentioned. Alternative No. 2 has a pro-

tected construction cost estimate of $2,600,000. To arrive at this figure, we

have researched construction companies* and material suppliers* and previous cost

estimates:

* 1. Colorado Ditch Liners Company

2. Pink Wilson Ditch Company

3. Hydro Construction

4. Carder Concrete Company
5. Hydro Conduit Company

28
