The contractor shall construct separate portions of the
embankment below original ground surface, subject to the
approval of the Engineer. Above original ground surface,
longitudinal bonding surfaces (surfaces parallel to the
centerl i ne crest of em,bankment) ",i 11 not be permi t ted.

B.

Placing.

1. The distribution and gradation of the materials
throughout the earthfill shall be such that the fill will
be free from lenses, pockets, streaks, or layers of
material differing substantially in texture, gradation, or
moisture from the surrounding material. The combined
excavation and placing operations shall be such that the
materials, when compacted in the earthfill, will be
blended to secure the specified practicable degree of
compaction, stability and gradation. Successive loads of
material shall be dumped on the earthfill so as to produce
the best distribution of the material, subject to the
approval of the Engineer and for this purpose the Engineer
may designate the location~ in the earthfill where the
individual loads shall be deposited.

2. The material shall be placed in the earthfill in continuous,
approximately horizontal layers not more than 6 inches in
thickness after being compa, ted. If, in the opinion of the
Engineer, the surface of the prepared foundation on the
compacted surface of any layer of earthfill is too dry or smooth
to bond properly with the lsyer of material to be placed
thereon, it shall be moistened and/or worked with harrow,
scarifier, or other suitable equipment, in an approved manner to
a sufficient depth to provide a satisfactory bonding surface
before the next succeeding layer of earthfill material is
placed. If, in the opinion of the Engineer, the compacted surface
of any layer of the earthfill in place is too wet for proper
compaction of the layer of earthfill material to be placed
thereon, it shall be removed; allowed to dry; or be worked with
harrow, scarifier, or other suitable equipment to reduce the
moisture content to the required amount; and then it shall be
recompacted befor-e the nex t succeedi ng 1 ayer of earthf ill
material is placed.

3.02 FOUNDATION PREPARATION

A. No material shall be placed in any portion of the dam
embankment until the foundation for each section has been
unwatered, stripped, suitably prepared, and has been
approved by the Engineer.

B.
