The land may be generally
described as that land lying south of Highway 160. with the western boundary
being approximately 6 miles west of Highway 159, bounded on the south by the
Trinchera and Highline Canals. and bounded on the east by the footh11ls of the
Sangre de Cristo Mountains. This area comprises approximately !4.100 llcres of
irrigated land. Of this land approximately 11.800 acres can be irrigated out of
Mountain 110me Reservoir,

The purpose of the proposed rehabilitation is to enable
continue to serve lands which are presently irrigated,
acreage is anticipated due to the rehabilitation.

the Irrigation Company to
No increase in irrigated

The distribution of soils in the area is shown on Figure III -2 as taken from the
Soil Conservation report "WATERSHED WORK PLAN" 1975, No published soil
surveys exist for Costilla County.

There are four predominant soil groups in the watershed as shown on Figure III-2
and as described below.

1) Soil Type I - very deep, well drained 10amy soils more than 20 inches
deep over gravel with high to moderate available water capacity, Perme-
ab1l1ty is moderate (0.6 to 2,0 in/hr) and moderately rapid (2.0 to 6.0
in/hr), Available water capacity is high (0,13 to 0,18 in/in of soil or more
than 7,5 inches per 5-foot soU profile) to moderate (0,8 to 0.13 in/in of
soU or 5 to 7,5 inches per 5-foot soil profUe),

Soils in this group are in the Land Capab1l1ty Subclass IIIe and IVe when
irrigated. SoU blowing is a major management problem.

The soils in this group comprises approximately 22% of the total acreage in
the area served by Mountain Home Reservoir

2) SoU Type II - very deep. poorly and somewhat poorly drained 10amy
soils, more than 20 inches deep over gravel with high to moderate
avaUable water capacity. Permeability is moderate (0,6 to 2.0 in/hr) or
moderately slow (0,2 to 0.6 in/hr), Available water capacity is high (0,13
to 0.18 in/in of soil or more than 7,5 inches per 5-foot soil profile) to
moderate (0,08 to 0.13 in/in of soU or 5 to 7.5 inches per 5-foot soU
profile), The water table is within 2-feet of the soil surface during the
irrigation season.

Soils in this group are in the Land Capability Subclass IIIe. IIIw, IVw, and
Vw when irrigated. Soil blowing and control of the water table are the
major management problems.

PAGE llI-l
Chapter III - Ibmtain IbDe Reservoir
