'"

Basin Project Act of 1968 (PL 90-537). Those reports and accompanying

background data are available in the Durango Projects office of the Bureau.

Subsequent to the feasibility report the Bureau has conducted additional

investigations, culminating in the issilance of a report with appendices

entitled "Planning Report on the San Miguel Project," dated May 1982. In

addition to these formal reports, the Bureau has accumulated a substantial

acount of hydrologic and land use data.

The Norwood office of the Soil Conservation Service has detailed land use

and soil classification maps, as well as data regarding past irrigation

system improvement programs in which they have participated.

The office of the Division Engineer in ~lontrose has records of ditch

diversions and releases from existing reservoirs for a number of years,

which will be useful in identifying water use patterns and historic

shortages.

In addition to public agency data, Western Engineers, Inc. has previously

accumulated information regarding water rights and diversion records from

the division engineer' 5 office. This information was utilized in the

preparation of a report entitled "Reconnaissance Report for Syste1l!

Improvement," which was submitted to the San Miguel Water Conservancy

District in June, 1983.

J..'hile all the above-cited sources of information will be useful, none of

them of themselves completely analyze the concept of development which this

study will address, namely the maximum use and re-use of water diverted

from tributaries high in the drainage basin and its delivery (with one

notable exception) through existing facilities. The exception referred to

is the potential water service to East Paradox Valley which presently has

no water supply.

-6-
