<br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br /> <br />Need for the Project <br /> <br />The Julesburg Irrigation District is undertaking this project so that it can continue to provide <br /> <br /> <br />a reliable supply of irrigation water to its $hareholders, During the period of June 18 to <br /> <br /> <br />June 24,1997, the west diversion dam and check structure were severely damaged due <br /> <br /> <br />to high flow conditions on the South Platte River, The concrete floor was undermined by <br /> <br /> <br />flood waters; a pier and about 75 feet of the floor collapsed into the hole. The right <br /> <br /> <br />abutment pier and concrete were displaced 4 feet down river. It is assumed to be <br /> <br /> <br />damaged beyond repair. This diversion dam can not be used without pushing up a <br /> <br /> <br />temporary sand dam, The east diversion ::;tructure is also damaged; the south 90 feet of <br /> <br /> <br />the structure is broken up and piers are missing, A temporary dam of rip-rap and trees is <br /> <br />currently filling this void, The canal control gates are showing the years of wear and are <br /> <br />becoming increasingly difficult to operate, <br /> <br />Alternatives Evaluated <br /> <br />A range of alternatives were considered including: 1) to replace the east and west <br /> <br /> <br />structure with a new structure; 2) to replace the east structure; 3) to repair the east <br /> <br /> <br />structure; 4) to try and get by with the exi$ting diversion. <br /> <br />2 <br />
