I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I

Need for the Project

The Julesburg Irrigation District is undertaking this project so that it can continue to provide

a reliable supply of irrigation water to its $hareholders, During the period of June 18 to

June 24,1997, the west diversion dam and check structure were severely damaged due

to high flow conditions on the South Platte River, The concrete floor was undermined by

flood waters; a pier and about 75 feet of the floor collapsed into the hole. The right

abutment pier and concrete were displaced 4 feet down river. It is assumed to be

damaged beyond repair. This diversion dam can not be used without pushing up a

temporary sand dam, The east diversion ::;tructure is also damaged; the south 90 feet of

the structure is broken up and piers are missing, A temporary dam of rip-rap and trees is

currently filling this void, The canal control gates are showing the years of wear and are

becoming increasingly difficult to operate,

Alternatives Evaluated

A range of alternatives were considered including: 1) to replace the east and west

structure with a new structure; 2) to replace the east structure; 3) to repair the east

structure; 4) to try and get by with the exi$ting diversion.

2
