.

.

,

.

.

.

.'

identified along this canyon section as part of the surficial geologic
mapping.

Powell Park - It appears there is an abundance of gravel and sand
adjacent to the dam suitable for concrete aggregate and/or shell
material. About 10 test pits shall be excavated to confirm quantities
and to provide samples for laboratory testing. The investigation for
impervious borrow material will probably center around alluvial fans
from tributaries to the White River and colluvial surface material from
the right abutment. About 10 auger holes and 5 test pits shall be used
in this region to determine quantities and to provide material for
laboratory testing. A search shall be made for a source of suitable
riprap, probably in the hard marlstone of the Green River formation.

Products resulting from this task shall be logs of all boreholes and test
pits. This information will be correlated with seismic refraction to
produce sections and isopachs of the potential borrow areas. Results of
laboratory tests on construction materials sampled under this task will
either be shown on the logs or in a separate section of the final report.
In addition to the surficial geologic map, a construction materials map will
be prepared for each site showing the location, qualities and nature of
available material, as well as the physical characteristics determined from
laboratory testing.

Task 8 - Laboratory Testing
samples from the foundation
selected shall first be
System. All samples shall
following basic physical
Atterberg limits.

- Materials testing shall be conducted on soil
holes, auger holes, and test pits. All samples
classified by the Unified Soil Classification
undergo preliminary testing to determine the
properties: specific gravity, gradation, and

Secondary testing shall be conducted according to the potential use of the
material. Selected samples of potential embankment materials shall be
remolded to near maximum density and subjected to triaxial shear tests.

A-12
