.

:

,

.

.

Task 7 - Construction Materials Investigation - A thorough reconnaissance
shall be made in the vicinity of the dam sites for potential construction
materials. Materials to be investigated shall include sands and gravels for
possible use as concrete aggregates, RCC aggregates, filter and drain
material, or shell material for embankment dams. Other materials shall
include impervious soils for potential use as core material for embankment
dams and rock and boulders with potential riprap.

The investigation shall consist of utilizing the geologic mapping to
delineate general material sources near each of the sites. Subsurface
investigation shall be made by a combination of auger holes, test
seismic refraction lines. The investigation program shall
objective of determining the approximate quantities of various
construction materials and their physical properties.

pits, and
have the
potential

Lake Avery - Approximately 10 auger holes and 10 test pits shall be
utilized to define possible impervious blanket material and dam
embankment materials. Gravel shell material and concrete aggregate
appear to be in abundance on the left abutment. The results of surface
mapping and foundation investigations will determine the most
economically accessible source location. A suitable quality hard
sandstone riprap appears to be available from the Maroon formation
adjacent to the dam; yet, alternative sources shall be investigated.

Mainstem Sites - Alluvial gravel and sand suitable for concrete and
shell material shall be investigated and quantities proved out as near
to the dam centerline as possible. It is expected that ample quantities
will be available in the White River flood plain and on terraces along
the north abutments. These areas shall be investigated by using 5 test
pits and 10 auger holes per site, with depths extending to the water
table. Samples will be collected for laboratory analysis.

Impervious materials shall be investigated by utilizing 10 auger and
percussion holes and 10 test pits. Samples will be collected for
laboratory testing. Potential quarry sites for riprap shall be

A-ll
