.

.

and jointing that might have an effect on the physical feasibility of the
sites. A survey will be made of the jointing revealed in rock outcrops of
the units that might affect stability or permeability of the foundation.

Specific requirements for each dam site are as follows:

Lake Avery - The surface geologic mapping at the Lake Avery site shall
focus on delineating the limits and nature of the alluvial overburden on
the left abutment and on describing the alluvium-bedrock contact.
Special attention shall be given to an apparent gravel-filled channel
southwest of the present dam. This channel, if verified, could have an
effect on the maximum height to which the dam could be raised. A source
of impermeable blanket and core material shall be sought because
previous investigations have indicated this as a critical need in
designing a larger dam.

Mainstem Sites - The surface geology of the entire study area along the
mainstem of the White River shall be mapped using the new topography.
Attention shall be given to accurately mapping the various lithologic
units that the river cuts through in this stretch. The mapping shall
record the strike and dip and principal joint patterns in these units.
Any significant faulting or folding of these units is to be shown on the
map. Special attention is to be given to investigating the possible
occurrence of landslides along the south side of the river.

Based upon the results of the geologic mapping, previous hydrologic
studies, and reservoir storage characteristics, the Contractor, in
cooperation with the State shall select the most feasible sites for
detailed site investigation.

Powell Park - Although the surficial geology of the reach of the White
River in which the Powell Park dam and reservoir is located has been
previously mapped in some detail, The Contractor shall upgrade this
work. The Powell Park site abutments are to be critically examined to
determine the best alignment for a dam axis. The reconnaissance study

A-5
