.

CHAPTER I

GENERAL DISCUSSIONS

Municipal water supplies

The small communities in the project area obtain domestic water from
nearby streams, springs, and wells. In general their supplies are of sat-
isfactory quantity and quality for present conditions and population,

utilities and services

Electric power is supplied to communities in the general vicinity of
the project by the Yampa Valley, White River. and Moon Lake Electric Asso-
ciations, These associations presently generate power to meet some of
their requirements and also obtain power from the Bureau of Reclamation's
Colorado-Big Thompson project. In the near future the Yampa Valley and
White River Associations are expected to be served from the Colorado-ute
Electric Association which is a generation and transmission cooperative.
The Colorado-Ute Association is presently constructing a 150.000-kilowatt
steam-electric plant at Hayden, Colo., which will be interconnected with
the power system of the Colorado Biver Storage project at the project's
Hayden substation. Power from the. storage project also will be provided
to the Moon Lake Association through interconnections at the Vernal and
Rangely substations.

Telephone service is available at all communities and most of the
. farms and ranches in the area,

Need for Further Develo~ment

Agricultural development in the Juniper project area can be signif-
icantly expanded only with development of additional irrigation water from
the Yampa River through storage regulation and distribution facilities
such as would be provided by the Juniper.project. Dry farming cannot be
practiced successfully because of the limited rainfall during the growing
season, and without storage regulation the streamflows in late summer are
too erratic and too..low for substantial new irrigation developments.

.

10
