<br /> <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />CHAPTER I <br /> <br />GEfffiRAL DISCUSSIONS <br /> <br />Oil is produced in the Red Wash (Deadman Bench) area of Utah, in the <br />Rangely field area of Colorado immediately south of the project area, and <br />in other scattered areas of the Yampa and White River Basins, Oil from <br />these fields is piped to refineries in Salt Lake City, Utah, about 170 <br />miles west of Rangely. COlo, <br /> <br />. <br /> <br /> <br />.' ,-(,,""',' , <br />75~?9~~~~ <br />""'---~~.,* ,.~~ <br />developments in Utah in the <br />area of the Juniper project. <br /> <br />A uranium mine and a mill currently processing About 1,000 tons of ore <br />per day are located near MaYbell, COlo, Gilsonite is mined in the Vicinity <br />of Bonanza,Utah, and piped as slurry about 70 miles south to a processing <br />plant near Fruita, COlo, Extensive deposits of coal and oil shale which <br />are as yet undeveloped lie south and east of the project area, Large <br />deposits of phosPhate-bearing materials are located northWest of the proj- <br />ect in the vicinity of Vernal, Utah, Also in the Vicinity of the project <br />there are large deposits of bituminous sandstone and commercial ~uantities <br />of copper and silver which have been developed to only a limited degree. <br />Continuing development of the area's natural resources appears to be <br />assured because of the Nation's continUOUSly increasing needs, Such devel_ <br />opment will be facilitated by power being made available from the ~olorado <br />River Storage project and a steam-electric plant now under construction at <br />Hayden, COlo, <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />Small amounts of land are irrigated along the Yampa River in the <br />Maybell-Sunbeam area of Colorado and along the Green River in Utah. <br /> <br />8 <br /> <br /> <br />
