.

CHAPTER I

GENERAL DISCUSSIONS

The North and South Forks and Marvine Creeks are major tributaries of the
White River in its upper reaches. Near its lower reaches in the general
vicinity of the project, the river is joined by Piceance. Yellow, Wolf,
and Douglass Creeks. Numerous smaller tributaries, many of which are
intermittent, join the river throughout its courSe.

Climate

The Juniper project area has a temperate semiarid climate with rela-
tively warm summers and cold winters. Although no records of climatic
conditions have been maintained in the immediate project area. tempera-
tures and precipitation in the area have been estimated from long-time
records maintained at nearby Vernal, Jensen, and Bonanza, Utah. The aver-
age annual temperature is estimated to be about 46 degrees. The average
frost-free periOd is estimated at approximately 120 days and the average
growing season at about 150 days. Estimated average annual precipitation
is about 8 inches, of which 3 to 4 inches occur as rain during the grow-
ing season. Irrigation is essential to successful crop production.

.

Industrial Development

Local industry

Oil prOduction, uranium mining and milling, and production of livestock
(primarily sheep) are the main industries in the vicinity of the project.

.

~~
'~1
~~n
t:z:t.
n
il \;
--.4-
I.t ..1
nA

Oil drilling operation about 7 miles east of Msybell, Colo.

7
