.

CHAPTER I

GENERAL DISCUSSIONS

Streams and watersheds

The Yampa and White Rivers, which would provide project water, border
the project area on the north and south. Both are tributaries of the
Green River which in turn is a tributary of the Colorado River.

Yampa River heads on the eastern end of the White River Plateau and
the westeru slope of the Park Range in the Rocky Mountains which form the
Continental Divide. From its headwaters at elevations of more ~han 12,000
feet the river flows westward about 250 miles to its junction with the
Green River about 4 miles east of the Colorado-Utah border. Through most
of its length the river flows through fairly broad valleys. It has cut
through hard rock formations, however, at Juniper, Cross, and Blue Moun-
tains to form narrow canyons or gorges. Beth Juniper and Cross Mountain
Canyons are potential major sites for regulation of the river flow. Trib-
utaries of the Yampa River in the vicinity of the project include Williams
Fork River, Ley Creek, Deception Creek, and the Little Snake River.

.

White River runs generally parallel to and south of the Yampa River.
It has its principal headwaters in the White River Plateau at elevations
up to 12,000 feet. From its headwaters the White River flows generally
westward about 180 miles to its confluence with the Green River, about 2
miles south of Ourey, Utah, and 35 miles west of the Utah-Colorado line.

.

Looking east at Green River and White River near Ouray, Utah.

6
