.

CHAPTER I

GENERAL DISCUSSIONS

Larger communities and trading centers are not far di~tant from the proj-
ect area. These are Craig, Colo., about 30 miles east of Maybell with a
1960 population of nearly 4,000; Rangely, Colo., about 10 miles south of
the central portion of the project area with a 1960 population of about
2,500; and Vernal, Utah, about 30 miles northwest of Artesia with a 1960
population of nearly 3,700. The smaller communities of Jensen and Ouray,
Utah, adjoin the project area on the west.

Irrigable lands of the Juniper project range in elevation from
slightly over 6,000 feet near Ma.ybell and Elk Springs to 4,540 feet at the
mouth of White River. Most of the lands, however. lie between 5,000 and
6,000 feet. Three prominent mountains rise to the north of the project
area. Juniper Mountain east of Maybel1 and Cross Mountain west of Maybell
are isolated hills which reach elevations of 7.900 and 7,800.respectively.
Blue Mountain extends about 30 miles east and west between the settlements
of Elk Springs and Jensen. Its maximum elevation is about 8,700 feet.

.

""'''''~W'

'---'"~-

'~~~Jl~';>~-. .. .

Looking northwest at Cross Mountain.

.

5
