.

FOREWORD

The appraisals for this report were made on the basis of basic data
from reconnaissance engineering field surveys and land classification
surveys already available from previous investigations. New work for the
appraisals included the making of water requirement and operation studies.
facility sizing studies, power and recreational development evaluations,
cost estimates, and cost allocation, repayment, and benefit evaluations.

.

Following the appraisals of the alternative plans, further field
inspection and spot checking were made of the lands in the project area
previously classified and mapped as arable. This inspection revealed
that much of the area has complex soil, topographic, and drainage condi-
tions that are interrelated in determining land classes and the suita-
bility of the lands for sustained irrigation farming. In view of this
condition and the fact that some of the arable lands are in rather scat-
tered and isolated small tracts, it appears that the actual acreage in
the project area suitable for irrigation development will be substantially
less than indicated by the earlier reconnaissance studies. Because of the
complexity of the land conditions prevailing over much of the project area,
it was concluded that detailed land classification, engineering surveys,
and economic evaluations would be required for a reasonably reliable deter-
mination of the total irrigable acreage to be included in the project area.
Thus it should be recognized that irrigable acreages used in the prelimi-
nary appraisals in the accompanying report will be substantially reduced
and that the economic justification of the various plans for irrigation
development will be somewhat less favorable than indicated.

.

Potential Juniper project lands about a mile
west of Massadona, Colo.
2
