The Winter Park Ski Area started <br />operation in 1940. As a part of the Denver Mountain Parks System, it <br />was run directly by the City until 1950 when responsibility for the <br />development and operation was transferred to the Winter Park Recreational <br />Association, a non-profit corporation acting as the City's agent. The <br />Association trustees, fifteen in number, are civic-minded, ski-oriented <br />Denver citizens who receive no salary. The Winter Park Ski Area base <br />facilities include the Balcony House day center, the administration <br />building, maintenance facilities, and the ski school. Portions of the <br />Winter Park Ski Area are constructed on Forest Service land. <br /> <br />Winter Park has had an enviable growth record--from 39,000 skiers in <br />1950 to 359,078 for the season beginning in 1974. \~ith the opening of <br />the Mary Jane area in 1975, attendance at Winter Park increased by <br />38 percent over 1974 to 494,733. <br /> <br />The maximum day skier attendance at Winter Park prior to the opening of <br />the Mary Jane facilities was approximately 6,900. Last year, total <br />maximum day attendance was approximately 8,470 with an estimated break- <br />down of 2,540 at Mary Jane and 5,930 at Winter Park. Maximum day <br />attendance is expected to be approximately 10,000 skiers with approxi- <br />mately 6,500 skiers at Winter Park and approximately 3,500 skiers at <br />Mary Jane. Total annual attendance is expected to increase at a higher <br />rate than maximum day attendance due to the effects of the installation <br />of snowmaking equipment which will enable the area to open two or three <br />weeks earlier, and construction of additional lodging facilities to <br />attract the destination skiers from out of state who typically ski during <br />the week, increasing weekday attendance which is now only about one- <br /> <br />111-2 <br />
